Onto Cat Island

Before leaving Long Island to explore Cat Island on January 28th, we asked fellow sailors if the island was over run with feral cats. Josephine was concerned about the chance that Queso would have a hayday on Cat Island. We were laughed at and told that zero cats had been seen on their own visits to the Island.

We set sail for the North end of Long Island and anchored for the night. We had the treat of meeting up with SV Gnarwhal which we have kept in touch with since St Augustine. They delivered fresh fish to us and it was great to catch up. The next day they went hiking near the anchorage and took a picture (see below) of us sailing to Cat Island.

If conditions are calm enough under sail, we often cook up a meal. Our stove top has metal holders to keep pots from sliding.

January 30th had us finding the town dock and hiking up Como Hill which is the highest point in the Bahamas. It was hot and not shady but we all made it. The hermitage at the top is beautiful and well worth the hike. The Catholic priest who built the chapel (he was a trained architect before entering the Church) lived in a small cave near by while completing construction. I was taken by the steps leading up and also the blue trim/doors.

The doorways were small and everything felt as though it was on a mini scale.

In the afternoon Nate and I ventured to the local grocery store as we always have a running list of ingredients and since each store is so different, we sometimes get lucky on fresh herbs or muesli. As we walked a nice gentlemen picked us up in his truck as he was on his way to the airport. He was from the Midwest and had bought a house on the Island. He previously owned another house in the Bahamas but it was shared and there was a falling out with a sister in law. No rides on the way back but it was fun to see all the colorful homes. Jo came to pick us up in the dinghy.

In the evening we had a great happy hour with Emily and Greg on SV Sparkle Motion. They gave us a full tour and I was impressed with their herb/plant collection which was successfully growing. Emily made homemade pita and hummus.
